Hey Folks, Panda #3 here, aka Panda Blizzard von Thunder Lizard aka the Foxy Panda aka Fat Panda Who's A Flatlandah....It's a well-known fact that Pandas love grooving to music. Not convinced? Here's proof:
Every music lover must have their list of "must-go-to" concerts. A list of music acts to see live either before the end of your life, before the band in question breaks up, or the musician's health becomes so drained by drugs and alcohol that they can no longer perform at an acceptable level. Two acts that have been on my list for at least 8 years have been the gypsy world music punk rock band Gogol Bordello and the orchestral pride of the Canadian indie music scene Hey Rosetta! It's been a tense 8 years. Often I found my self laying in bed at night, praying and muttering "please don't let them break up, I must see them, please!" As good fortune would have it I managed to see both, live in concert, right here in Alberta, in the span of the past two weeks. And they did not disappoint. Phew!!!! There is an indescribable satisfaction in seeing one of your favourite bands live for the first time, and after all the anticipation and relief that your car did in fact start that day, that you did not crash on the way to the venue, and you did in fact remember your ticket, you discover that they are equally as awesome live as they were blasting through your van speakers via a scratched up cd.
I won`t put too much thought into my official concert review, I think 10 out of 10 fresh bamboo shoots would be fair for both.
A few notes on Hey Rosetta!:
-Yukon Blonde opened and they were awesome.
-The Jack Singer Concert Hall in downtown Calgary was the super fancy venue and had an insane amount of ushers and a giant organ
-Dance of choice was the aggressive snake dance which starts as a subtle head nod, coordinates with weight drop through the ankles, and crescendos with the music to a full body roll
- Went all by myself, and didn`t mind one bit
-Encore included an unexpected cover of Stand By Me

A few notes on Gogol Bordello:
-Highest number of top hats I`ve ever seen at a concert
-Dance of choice: aggressive jumping up and down and fist pumping whilst yelling out english lyrics and mumbling through russian lyrics
-Ginormous 5 song encore, with a sneaky, bonus second encore
-Band seemed genuinely stoked and grateful to crowd for such a high energy evening, which is always nice
-Lead singer Eugene`s abs were.... next level. Seriously, he makes David Beckham look fat
-Stoked to be joined by one of my best friends in the whole wide world who has a burning love for gypsy rock.
